Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Warriors Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in influence within the city.

Note: Key plot points for the latest installment of the new season follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the developments of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to head next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his own means, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking the character, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then settled his debts and ran away to a secure base in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each adventurer has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the companion and trusted friend, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the group reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are sought by the rulers that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The healer defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to head to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Seekers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can look forward to learning which characters will be in which group in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
