European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
