Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without immediately provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
