A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
