The English along with Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
