Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
