A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Experts Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting substances of uncertain source.
Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Response and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the service has taken down problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at home.
Within moments of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these groups, messages display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in interest to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has previously seen patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
